Braving the Cold at Nationals Opening Night, the Inaugural Game for New Stadium

Sunday, March 30th, 2008

Opening Night tonight was colder than yesterday’s exhibition game in part due to the later start, but also just it being a colder night temperature wise. It was totally worth sticking it out, though, as the game ended with a bang. Lots of people left early and boy did they miss out by not sticking around. The long lines at concessions continued today, but I got to give a big thumbs up to the continued efficiency of the Metro system. They did an awesome job with the bigger crowd tonight before and after the game. In particular, I appreciate that they held the yellow line to Huntington train for some extra time at L’Enfant Plaza to ensure those that just got off from the green line from the stadium were able to make the transfer. That just went above and beyond what I would have expected them to do and greatly increased the speed I got home.

Balloons greeted fans to the park today for Opening Day along with a red carpet with Nats logos and Coca Cola logos. It most definitely is a Coke park.

I was not planning to get a Build-a-Bear, but I just could not pass up the special Opening Day shirt. I got a bear with the Inaugural Season logo on his foot and the shirt.

Welcome Home still of the video progression they showed of the ballpark being built

They unfurled two giant United States flags in center field and they held them here as the lineups and rosters were announced for both teams and the National Anthem was sung.

Those on the Nats line up ran between the flags to the first base line as they were announced.

President George W. Bush throws out the Ceremonial First Pitch and yes there was a general booing heard from the crowd.

Appropriately George Washington wins the first President race at the new ballpark.

Cool promo they gave out after game, which I did pick up. It is a newspaper print of the first pitch. The first thing that made me realize it was most definitely worth sticking it the game even though I was cold.

We were in the only section that had lights not working from above. Kind of odd, but hey it is only Opening Night at the ballpark.

DSC_0195.jpg

The Braves score a run to tie the game in the top of the ninth forcing a bottom of the ninth. Some people began to leave and many had already left. Boy did they not have faith.
DSC_0200.jpg

Ryan Zimmerman running the bases after he hit a home run to win the game in the bottom of the ninth with 2 outs. First home run by a Nationals player in the new ballpark and a better than Hollywood ending to the first official game in their new stadium.

The team comes out to congratulate Zimmerman as he reaches home plate after hitting the game winning home run.

DSC_0231.jpg

Final Box Score of an amazing Opening Night that turned out to be an awesome game to attend and worth braving the cold to see it to the end. Now lets root for an awesome season. A World Series win would not be bad, although if the Cubbies play the Nationals in the post season I would have to loyally still root for the Cubs. I have been a Nats fan since they came to the Capital, but I have been a Cubs fan longer and they are still overall my team.

Nationals First Game at Their New Stadium

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

I just got back from attending the exhibition game of the Baltimore Orioles at the Washington Nationals. This is the first game they are playing at their new stadium (more info on the stadium will be in this week’s Special Topic Tuesday after I do some more first hand exploring of the stadium tomorrow at Opening Day), although tomorrow’s game is being called the Inaugural Game. Today’s game was surprisingly slim on fans. It was still a decent crowd for an exhibition game. I am sure the turnout tomorrow will be much better even if the person throwing out the first pitch is disliked by many (I overheard people on the Metro debating whether or not President Bush will be booed as he throws out the pitch).

Before today’s game they had a ribbon cutting ceremony. The opening pitch was thrown out by D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty. Below are a few photos of the new stadium and ribbon cutting. I left before the end of the game because I was getting really cold (I will wear layers tomorrow). They were winning 3-0 when I left at the 7th inning stretch.

DSC_0003.jpgDSC_0014_1.jpg

By the way Metro did a fabulous job before and after the 7th inning stretch rush getting the fans through the system efficiently. Oh, and Metro riders part of game day traffic were friendly (extremely friendly compared to my experience this morning). They did, however, cause some confusion to fans who got on a special train (including me) at L’Enfant Plaza. It was supposed to go straight to the Navy Yard station, but instead it appeared to accidentally missed the station and stopped at Anacostia. They were going to turn the train around and go back to the Navy Yard station, but instead the next Green Line going towards Navy Yard came by and we transferred across the platform to that. This was a very minor kink and the Metro employees handled it very well and hopefully this practice day will help them do an even better job tomorrow.

Today on the Mall: Kites, Cherry Blossoms, and Obnoxious Crowds

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Today I went down to the National Mall with the main intention of seeing the Cherry Blossoms around the Tidal Basin. I am glad I finally got to see the cherry blossoms in bloom in person, however, it overall was not worthwhile to go see on the weekend. Although, it was cool to see the kites flying as part of the Kite Festival by visiting today. I am sure most of those visiting were nice people and observant that there were others surrounding them, however, I was run into by too many unobservant people that rudely bumped into others and cutting across right in front of me causing me to run into them. At least it was on the side with the railings. I seriously was too scared to walk down by the basin when there was not a rail because of what I experienced over on the side with a rail. And that was just the annoying crowds at the tidal basin. The worst crowds were on the Metro and at the Smithsonian Metro Station. On the Metro train I got smashed against the side of the train car, which is extremely uncomfortable because the walls are curved. I have done rush hour commuting and Nationals after game on the Metro and never experienced such rude people on the Metro. I know it was probably a relatively isolated incident today, but I was appalled at the rude tourists (and I know most of those rude people I encountered, especially on the Metro were tourists) I encountered today.

Kite FestivalCherry BlossomsDSC_0024_2.jpg

Anyways the Cherry Blossoms are still beautiful, but I totally do not recommend anyone going to see them on the weekend. Tonight I am headed to the Nationals Exhibition game and I sure I will encounter more crowded Metro trains, especially on the way home, but from my experience game crowds contain a lot more locals who know how to be respectful to others even in crowded areas.

Book of Week: Assassination Vacation

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

13867917.JPG

This week’s book may be a little of a stretch in its relation to D.C., as it is only partly about sites in D.C., however it turned out to have a lot more than the first book I picked up thinking it would have some D.C. area connections (it was George Washington’s Christmas Farewell: A Mount Vernon Homecoming, 1783, which only ends up with a very small part at the end of him finally being in the area of Mount Vernon near what would become the Nation’s Capital). Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell is part history part travel narrative. The book is not exactly focused on D.C., but rather on the author traveling to sites related to the assassinations of three U.S. presidents. As part of this narrative it is only natural that D.C. ends up being mentioned several times. This book is an interesting history about the assassinations, although it sometimes goes off on tangents that can get confusing.

The first section about Lincoln’s assassination talks about sites in D.C. such as Ford’s Theater. I imagine if the author did this book a little more recently then the recently reopened Lincoln Cottage might have earned more mention, although it does get its mention in that Lincoln was shot at during one of his rides home to it.

The second section is about Garfield’s assassination and includes her doing a walking tour related to places Garfield visited during his presidency in D.C. This includes the Arts and Industries Building, where he had his inauguration ball, and where the National Gallery of Art is now located, which was where the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station that he was shot at was once located.

The third section is about McKinley’s assassination and does not have much of anything related to D.C., although it does have some interesting comparing of McKinley’s administration to the current Bush administration. The last section has some more D.C. related parts, in particular about the Lincoln Memorial.

Basic Information About the Book:

ISBN #: 0-7432-6003-1
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Year of Publication: 2005
Number of Pages: 258

If you have a suggestion of a D.C. related book that you would like to see featured in a future Book of the Week post, then please either comment on this post or e-mail me at kjersti.wasiak@451press.net

Special Topic Tuesday: Cherry Blossom Festival

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

DSC_0126_1.jpg

The 2008 National Cherry Blossom Festival is coming up this Saturday. This year’s festival runs from March 29, 2008 through April 13, 2008. The peak bloom period has been forecasted to be between March 27, 2008 (this Thursday) through April 3, 2008 with the bloom period for 2008 being March 26 through April 9, 2008. Of course, the main attraction is seeing the cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin (map of where to find the blossoms can be found on this site), but their are some good festival events to attend as well.

The Opening Ceremony will be from 4pm to 5:30pm on Saturday, March 29 at the National Building Museum (conveniently located across from the Judiciary Square Metro Stop). As part of the opening day events the National Building Museum is having a Family Day of programs from 10am to 3:30pm. This includes oragami folding, a demonstration of a large scale oragami giraffe being made, creating miniature cherry blossom trees, Building Haiku, Mon-Kiri (Japanese Paper Cutting), display of entries from the National Cherry Blossom poster contest, trying on traditional Japanese clothing, making Blossom bookmarks, and performances such as the Dunbar High School Drumline.

Another major festival event is the Parade. The parade will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2008, at 10am. The parade route is on Constitution Avenue between 7th and 17th Streets NW. Highlights of the parade include Keke Palmer (Akeelah in Akeelah and the Bee and a Disney Channel Star), Mark Indelicato (plays Justin on Ugly Betty), Anwar Robinson (American Idol Finalist), Kristen Haglund (Miss America 2008), Cherry Blossom queens, and giant balloons. There is a good deal if you purchase grandstand seats for $15, as Madame Tussauds is offering free admission (normally costs over $20) to the museum if you bring your grandstand seat ticket stub to the museum before July 31, 2008.

After the parade their is the Street Festival. The Festival runs from 11am to 6pm. The festival is divided into four main areas. One is Arts and Crafts and shows traditional Japanese arts and crafts. One is J-Pop, which shows some Japanese pop culture such as Anime and Dance Dance Revolution (DDR). Another is Taste of Japan, which features Japanese and Asian restaurants. Lastly there is Ginza Marketplace, which features mostly Japanese products for sale. There are also four stages that will have performances throughout the day.
